Up 2007 Project 2006 Project 2005 Project

Project Number: HON 06059

Name of Project: Potrerillos Drilled Well Project

Partner Organization: COMVIDA

Community Description: Potrerillos, is one of 12 municipalities that form the Department of Cortes. Even though it is located in the development area of the central region of Honduras, it lacks of some basic services that affect the health of its habitants. Potrerillos is located on the south side of Cortes Department. It has 26 town wards in its urban area with an estimated population of 15,000 habitants, and 10 villages and 4 groups of houses, bringing the total population to 25,000 habitants.

A considerable number of the Potrerillos habitants work in the textile industry, and a small number are involved with agriculture and raising cattle. Most of the population is poor.

Community Needs: It is important to improve the water system currently used, since it utilizes wells that are situated on a flood plane that become contaminated every time there is flooding during the winter season.

Project Details: The water supply of Potrerillos depends on underground water that comes from deep drilled wells. The project consists of drilling a macro well. The drilling will be performed by a private consultant that will be supervised by WFP, COMVIDA and the municipality. The hygiene and education program will be facilitated by a health promoter provided through Water For People and COMVIDA.

The well will be drilled at a diameter of 18 inches and will be 200 feet deep. It will use 12-inch diameter PVC well casing SDR-21 and tube type grid. Once the pump for the well is installed, the municipality will be responsible for its maintenance.

The Number 7 well drilling project for the Municipality of Potrerillos will benefit about 11,784 people that inhabit the urban area of the northeast and southeast parts of the municipality, which includes 11 suburbs: Barrio San José zona baja, Las Flores, Suyapa, Morazán, Lempira, Barahona, Canada, San Miguel, Gracias a Dios, La Unión and Cabañas.

Beneficiaries: 11,784

Total Budget: $20,680
